The Recovery Guide
Lymphatic Drainage Massage After Surgery
The single most important thing you can do to protect your investment after cosmetic surgery. Here's what it is, why it matters, and how to time it for the smoothest recovery of your life.
The Basics
What is manual lymphatic drainage?
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialized, gentle massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system — the network of vessels and nodes responsible for filtering waste, bacteria, and excess fluid out of your body.
After cosmetic surgery like liposuction, BBL, tummy tuck, or breast procedures, your lymphatic system gets overwhelmed. Trauma releases massive amounts of interstitial fluid that pools under the skin. Without help, that fluid hardens into fibrosis — the lumps, dents, and rock-hard patches nobody warns you about.
MLD moves that fluid out. Slow, rhythmic, feather-light strokes guide lymph toward working nodes so your body can flush it — leaving softer tissue, smoother contours, and the results your surgeon actually sculpted.
Why It Matters
Four reasons every post-op client needs MLD
Reduces swelling fast
Gentle rhythmic strokes redirect trapped fluid into working lymph nodes so your body clears edema instead of storing it.
Prevents fibrosis
Early, consistent drainage keeps tissue soft and mobile before scar bands harden into lumps or dents.
Speeds healing
Better circulation means more oxygen to healing tissue — less bruising, less discomfort, and faster skin retraction.
Protects your results
Smoother contours, better skin tone, and the sculpted silhouette your surgeon shaped — preserved.
Your Recovery Timeline
When to book and how often
Every body heals differently, but this cadence is what we see produce the softest, smoothest post-op results.
Days 1–3 post-op
The critical window
Fluid buildup is at its peak. Starting drainage now — with your surgeon's clearance — dramatically reduces bruising, swelling, and the risk of seromas.
Week 1
Daily sessions
Daily 60–90 minute manual lymphatic drainage sessions clear the heaviest swelling and set the tone for how your body heals.
Weeks 2–4
3–4 sessions a week
Swelling migrates and shifts. Consistent MLD keeps fluid moving, softens fibrotic pockets, and helps your faja sit correctly.
Weeks 5–8
2 sessions a week
The final polish. Wood therapy and targeted work refine contours, break up remaining hardness, and lock in your definition.

FAQ
The questions we hear most
How soon after surgery should I start?
Most surgeons clear clients within 24–72 hours. The earlier you start (with clearance), the less swelling and fibrosis you'll deal with later.
How many sessions will I need?
Most BBL and lipo clients do best with 10–15 sessions over the first 4–6 weeks. Tummy tuck recovery is often similar. We build a plan around your surgery and timeline.
Should it hurt?
No. True MLD is gentle and rhythmic. If a practitioner is grinding into fresh incisions or pressing hard on inflamed tissue in the first two weeks, that's not drainage — and it can cause damage.
Do I still need it if I feel fine?
Yes. Fluid and fibrosis develop under the surface. You can feel fine at week two and discover hardened tissue at week six. Consistent MLD is preventive care, not just symptom relief.
